Blissful eyes peer from darkened caverns within
As the nose curves downward announcing withdrawal
The messaging of profound satisfaction
Twisted in an air of defeat
Suddenly a picket fence of aged white teeth
Frame an open smile
And whispered words are audible
Slurred between flickering eyes
With extended hand
A gentle clasp locks arms
Reeling me toward his chest
“I love you” is all I hear
Silence gives pause as I render a kiss
Repeating his devotion amid a sprinkling of tears
With deep resolve in gentle embrace
The final directive is wafted my way
“My treasure chest is full
I am now good to go”
A LIFE WELL LIVED-SYNOPSIS
It is now over two months since the ground caved under my feet. I thought it was time I fulfill my promise to Ken and write a poem inclusive of the couplet he gave me. He was so very proud of it. Although Ken humored my dissertations on various poem formats, his smile was always with poems written as spoken language. With this understanding, I knew the prelude to the couplet he wanted me to use had to be unstructured to adequately reflect his personality and speak his truth. Free verse it would be!
