Cry me a river…
Spawned and fed from Everest’s famed frozen peaks
To carry my rage and sadness that be
Messaged by Hermes the God of the Greeks
Cry me a river…
Of perpetual herculean grade
To cascade the summit’s edges
On measured descent to lush forest shade
Cry me a river…
Where swirling eddies and surging currents
Shift frenzied fury to relentless calm
To quell my life’s numerous deterrents
Cry me a river…
Of unpretentious childlike innocence
To give valid meaning to life’s journey
When all seems so lost and little makes sense
Cry me a river…
Of horizonless length and cosmic depth
To traverse the earth’s faraway reaches
Just me and my love, bereft of regrets
CRY ME A RIVER - SYNOPSIS
On Sept 18, 2020, it was announced that chief justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away after a 10 year battle with pancreatic cancer. That day, on route from the zoo, the love of my life was given the same diagnosis by phone in a crowded SUV with his grandkids and daughter. Even though that very afternoon we were seen by a team of doctors and nurses, I had no illusions. As a physician, I knew the overall survival rate was about 10% no matter what stage. It was going to be a battle to get him to outlier status with this disease.
This poem is a culmination of emotions from unbelievable rage, to sadness, to disbelief, and finally just wishful thinking wanting to escape the whole situation knowing this was a formidable foe.
