When the Music Stops

Thoughts and prayers sincere condolences

Words of communal grief with comfort meant

At gravesite earth bides its inheritance

A human life so loved now so absent

Cradled in its arms earth resumes its spin

Mother nature knows the loss is profound

Reassures me she will watch over him

Hoping final repose will spawn rebound

Within the void my heart awakens me

Remember I will come for you one day

Like a thunderbolt unexpectantly

The last dance will certainly guide your way

And so my dear Ken I will shine the light

On memories our kin can keep insight

WHEN THE MUSIC STOPS - SYNOPSIS

This poem will be the last in the category “Forever and Ever”. It references “The Last Dance” which I wrote Sept 8, 2020 having come to terms with my cardiac problem outlined in “My Story” in “About the Website”. It was on this date, our 41st wedding anniversary, that I vowed to accept my fate come what may. Exactly 10 days later, Sept 18, 2020, Ken was given the news of having pancreatic cancer. This is the very same day Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away with the same disease. Aware of the formidable prognosis, I did have some hope knowing she battled the disease for 9 years with reasonable function and overall health.

Like “The Last Dance”, the poem “When the Music Stops” is written as a Shakespearean sonnet. It is meant to portray Ken being delivered to the arms of Mother Earth for safekeeping. I take comfort with the knowledge the earth will continue to deliver Ken from darkness to light as it spins around the sun. My wish is that this final repose will help me reset my life although I remind myself there will be a last dance for me. The poem ends with hope and a transition to a new category “Memories”. It leaves a new wedding vow, a promise to carry his memory into future generations.
